Laredo’s mayor, Pete Saenz, has declared a state of emergency and has called on the federal government for assistance. “We are doing everything we can to help these migrants, but our resources are stretched thin,” Saenz said. “We need more personnel, more shelter space, and more resources to address this humanitarian crisis.” The surge in crossings has also raised concerns about public safety.
