Baltimore: Mayor Scott Issues Curfew After Night of UnrestBaltimore: Mayor Scott Issues Curfew After Night of Unrest Baltimore Mayor Bernard C. “Jack” Young has declared a curfew for the city following a night of unrest and violence. The curfew, effective immediately, will remain in place from 10:00 pm to 6:00 am each night until further notice. During this time, individuals are prohibited from being in public areas unless they are traveling to or from work, seeking medical attention, or participating in other essential activities. The decision to impose a curfew was made in response to a night of unrest that followed the release of body camera footage showing the fatal shooting of 27-year-old George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers. Rioters set fires, looted stores, and vandalized property throughout the city. “I understand the frustration and anger that people are feeling, but this violence and destruction is unacceptable,” Mayor Young said. “We cannot allow this to continue and we must restore order to our city.” The curfew will be enforced by the Baltimore Police Department, which has been authorized to use all necessary force to maintain peace. Violators of the curfew could face fines or imprisonment. City officials have also announced plans to impose additional restrictions on gatherings, including a ban on protests that involve more than 10 people. The curfew and other measures are intended to help prevent further violence and property damage, and to allow the city to begin the process of healing and rebuilding. Residents are urged to stay calm and follow the instructions of law enforcement officials.
