Following the initial closure of theme parks in March 2020, the industry faced a prolonged period of uncertainty and financial hardship. However, with the implementation of strict safety protocols and the gradual resumption of operations, Orlando’s theme parks have rebounded remarkably. Universal Orlando Resort, home to iconic attractions such as The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Islands of Adventure, has seen a surge in attendance since reopening in June 2020. The resort has invested heavily in health measures, including temperature screenings, face mask requirements, and increased sanitization. Likewise, Walt Disney World Resort has drawn large crowds since reopening in July 2020. The resort has introduced a reservation system to control capacity, reduced ride wait times, and implemented contactless payment options. According to the Orlando Economic Partnership, the theme park industry generated $30 billion in economic impact for the region in 2021, a figure that is expected to rise in the coming years. The industry supports over 650,000 jobs in the area, making it a vital part of the local economy. “The pandemic tested our industry in unprecedented ways, but we emerged from it with a renewed commitment to innovation and guest safety,” said John Sprouls, president and CEO of the Orlando Economic Partnership. “The continued success of Orlando’s theme parks is a testament to their timeless appeal and the unwavering dedication of their employees.” The resurgence of the theme park industry has also spurred significant investment in new attractions and experiences. Universal Orlando Resort recently opened Jurassic World VelociCoaster, a thrilling roller coaster themed after the popular film franchise. Disney World is preparing to launch Tron Lightcycle / Run, an immersive attraction based on the iconic Disney film. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve, the theme park industry in Orlando remains vigilant in implementing safety precautions. However, the industry’s unwavering commitment to entertainment and innovation ensures that Orlando’s theme park magic will continue to enchant visitors for years to come.
