The petroglyphs, etched into the volcanic escarpments, depict a variety of subjects, including human figures, animals, geometric designs, and symbols. Among the most striking images is a large anthropomorphic figure with outstretched arms, believed to represent a guardian or deity. Other petroglyphs include representations of birds, snakes, lizards, and dogs, as well as abstract designs that may have served as symbols of clans or family groups. According to Park Ranger Emily Swett, the discovery is a significant addition to the park’s known petroglyph collection. “These new petroglyphs provide valuable insights into the cultural practices and beliefs of the people who lived here thousands of years ago,” she said. The petroglyphs are estimated to be between 600 and 2,000 years old, and were created by the Puebloan peoples, who lived in the area from around 100 to 1500 CE. The petroglyphs were likely used for religious, ceremonial, or commemorative purposes. The newly discovered petroglyphs are located in a remote area of the park, and visitors will need to hike or bike to access them. Guided tours are also available for those interested in learning more about the park’s archaeological treasures. “The discovery of these ancient artworks is a reminder of the rich cultural heritage that exists in our backyard,” said Park Superintendent Peter Wall. “We are committed to preserving and protecting these precious resources for future generations.” The Petroglyph National Monument is home to over 24,000 known petroglyphs, making it one of the largest and most significant petroglyph sites in North America. The park provides visitors with a unique opportunity to connect with the past and learn about the lives of the people who called this area home centuries before.
