The plan calls for the development of a 1.5-acre park that will include: * Lush lawns and shaded areas for relaxation * Playgrounds and equipment for children * Fitness trails and exercise stations * Event spaces for community gatherings * A dog park for furry companions * Native landscaping to promote biodiversity The park will be located at the intersection of Central Avenue and Fifth Street, adjacent to the historic El Vado Yards. This central location will make it easily accessible to residents, visitors, and employees in the downtown area. Mayor Tim Keller, who championed the project, expressed his excitement at the council’s approval. “This new green space will be a transformative addition to our downtown,” he said. “It will provide a much-needed oasis for people to gather, play, and enjoy the outdoors in the heart of our city.” The Downtown Open Space Plan has been in the works for several years, with input from the community and stakeholders. The Albuquerque Parks and Recreation Department, in partnership with the Downtown Action Team, has worked tirelessly to develop a design that meets the needs of the community while respecting the historic character of the area. The project is expected to cost approximately $10 million, with funding coming from a combination of city funds, grants, and private donations. Construction is scheduled to begin in late 2023 and be completed by the end of 2025. The new downtown green space is expected to revitalize the area and attract businesses, residents, and tourists. It will also provide a much-needed space for people to connect with nature and each other in a dense urban environment.
